My Favourite Songs

When I was in Merchant Navy, I used to be away from home for long periods. I had started my career with The Shipping Corporation of India. It being an Indian Company the Signing On and Off was done when the ships visited the Indian Ports. Since the Company primarily dealt with the Imports and Exports for India, the ships routinely touched Indian ports. We could see Indian movies then and buy Cassettes which were in vogue those days. Later, after I started working for the foreign Companies, I remained abroad during the whole term of my contract with the Company I would choose to work with. Then I would carry, the audio- and video cassettes with me. Other people too, would bring their own stocks of books and Cassettes. Besides that the ships used to have a good stock of videos onboard too.

In 2009 when I decided to opt for working on shore as a Supervisor for Installation and Commissioning of the Machinery that was installed on the ships constructed in the Chinese Shipyards, the internet had become available world-wide. So, if one had an access to internet, one didn’t need to carry CDs and Cassettes with him. The whole concept of storing and listening the music was changing. Apple had come back from near bankruptcy by the success of their Ipod, a 5GB miniature device that could download and store one thousand songs. The whole concept of storing and listening to songs changed. Suddenly, the Cds. at least music CDs went out of market and Cassettes which were already dying a slow death were strangulated.

Though, for the first time, I was working on shore but I was in China, where it was very difficult to get anything in a language other than Chinese. Though, Chinese I found were fond of Hindi movies but they used to get the dubbed versions. Anyway, since China hadn’t yet tightened the screws on leakage of news from the guarded state that it is, youtube was still accessible. I used to download youtube song videos in my free time and before they clampdown completely on it because it had shared some videos of Buddhists monks setting themselves on fire in the Tibet and of the excesses of the police in controlling the uprising in Tibet, I had downloaded and saved quite a few of them. Since the purpose of this article is just to test the versatility of this website in letting the members post their audios and videos with ease, I will continue with my story some other time and post here some music and video files from my archives.
