Indian American Kid Gitajali Rao from Colorado named TIME KID OF 2020

Gitanjali Rao onm the cover of TIME magazine

Speaking from her home in Colorado, Gitanjali Rao told interviewer/actor Angelina Jolie that she wanted to research carbon nanotube sensor technology at the Denver Water quality research lab when she was only 10.

Over 5000 kids, from ages 8 to 16 in America, competed to be TIME KID OF 2020.

Sky is the limit for this Colorado kid. From developing an app to tackle cyberbullying to working on affordable technology that would allow one to ensure the purity of drinking water, Gitanjali wants to innovate.

Asked about her latest innovation aimed at preventing cyberbullying, Rao (15) said the service is called ‘Kindly’, An app and a Chrome extension, it detects cyberbullying at an early stage.

When she was hardly 10 years old, Gitanjali heard about the Flint water crisis while watching the news. She became interested in ways to measure the lead content in water. She developed a device based on carbon nanotubes that could send information via bluetooth. Rao collaborated with a research scientist at 3M. In 2017 Rao won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and was awarded $25,000 for her invention, Tethys. Tethys contains a 9-volt battery, a lead sensing unit, a bluetooth extension and a processor. It uses carbon nanotubes, whose resistance changes in the presence of lead. She learned about the carbon nanotubes while reading the Massachusetts Institute of Technology website. She plans to work with scientists and medical professionals to investigate the potential of Tethys as a viable method. She presented her idea at the 2018 MAKERS conference and raised a further $25,000. As of January 2019, she was working with the Denver water facility and hopes to have a prototype in the next two years. arly stage by making use of artificial-intelligence technology.

Talking about her innovation sessions, Rao told Academy Award Winning Actor, Angelina Jolie, that she follows a process of “observe, brainstorm, research, build, communicate”. Gitanjali Rao went further to add that her goal has shifted not only from creating her own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same.

A bright child with a very bright future. She must be having a scientist or an engineer one parent or both, I think and she is living in America, but then there are hundreds of such kids who have similar opportunities-so we must give her the due credits.
