First death in first phase of vaccine drive

New Delhi:

A 56-year-old healthcare worker in Gurgaon, who was given the ‘COVISHIELD’ coronavirus vaccine last Saturday, died in the early hours of 23rd January. The cause of the death is not yet known; body of the deceased (a woman) has been sent for an autopsy, doctors said.

According to her family, Rajwanti did not wake up in the morning and was brought dead at the Medanta hospital. She did not have any reaction to the vaccine on the day it was administered, they said.

Only after the post-mortem report comes, the cause of Rajwanti’s death will be known. Till then it will not be right to say that Rajwanti died due to the vaccine,” Gurgaon’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Virendra Yadav said.

FIRST PHASE OF VACCINATION DRIVE

India began one of the world’s biggest vaccination programmes on Saturday, 16th January, using  two locally manufactured vaccines…  COVAXIN (of Bharat bio-tech company, with Indian technology and manufacture) and COVISHIELD (with technology licensed from Oxford University UK) developed by Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII) at Pune.

The first phase of vaccination drive is expected to inoculate 3 crore healthcare as well as other front-line-workers in queue in coming month(s).

PLAN FOR SECOND PHASE OF VACCINATION DRIVE

About 27 crore people older than 50 and/or deemed at high-risk because of pre-existing medical conditions will be targeted for vaccination in the Second phase.

Prime Minister of India, Chief Ministers of States and Administrators of UTs, Ageing politicians and skeptics (including heads of opposition parties of India) who come forward to take the vaccine will be administered the vaccine.

Akhilesh Yadav said that he won’t trust the vaccine made under the present regime, though there was a more sinister reason behind his political statement, but surprisingly, the opposition, especially the Congress hasn’t cast aspersions on Covaxin. Against Covidshield of course they won’t have any reasons to raise doubts because the research and knowhow of it has come from their erstwhile rulers whom they still deify. Thankfully so far the none of the two vaccines has shown any serious side effects though besides the above death four other people have died, but the preliminary reports point at the causes of their deaths other than related to the dose of vaccine.
