Akshyay Tritiya A Sequel By Katokatha

Akshyay Tritiya – A Sequel

By Sreechandra Banerjee

When I wrote on Akshyay Tritiya last Sunday, in a hurry I couldn’t include many things, so thought of writing a sequel. Besides, I received a video on the Chaitri Hindola Puja of Akshyay Tritiya held this year (on 26th April, 2020) at Mahalaxmi Temple, Kolhapur. So, I had to post this sequel – but don’t know whether I will be able to upload this video -as don’t know how to upload MP4 files here- on this site – for which I could not upload video MP3 file of our Christmas Tree last December. Anyway – would upload another video on Akshyay Tritiya.

The word Akshyay means something that is not destroyed or is immortal.

This ‘Akshyay Tritiya’ or ‘Akha Teej’ is much venerated by Hindus and Jains. It is believed that good work done on this day brings success in one’s life. Activities, both spiritual and materialistic – attain fulfilment on this day.

Thus, it is customary to venerate Goddess Laxmi – The Goddess of Wealth on this day – to be bestowed with wealth.

It is said that Lord Kubera- the God-King of the semi-divine Yakshas – also prayed to Goddess Laxmi on this day. Goddess Laxmi, being pleased with His prayers bestowed Her blessings and so Lord Kubera became the Lord of Wealth!

And so, people pray to the Goddess by buying gold. Many start new business on this day. Some even get married on this day to immortalize their marriage.

On this day, God Ganesh is also venerated – and in one of my earlier posts (about eleven years back) had written on how God Ganesh is revered on this day.

Besides ritualistic worshipping of deities like Goddess Laxmi and God Ganesh, this sacred day is revered in different ways – like praying to one’s ancestors, giving donations, performing other works of charity, etc. Other acts of ‘karma-kriya’ are performed too. Whatever is done, is done with the belief that this spiritual veneration will pave the way to a successful life- materialistically and spiritually.

As is known, many buy gold – as they believe that it is an auspicious occasion to do so. This belief is much hyped by today’s commercial market.

Here is a video from the internet on Akshyay Tritiya.

(a video of some previous year, this year’s could not upload)
